Start of Second Version of Longship

After deciding a more detailed mesh was needed for this model I started over using a balsam wood model plan as the guide for creating the frame pieces. This way I will have much more accurate guides for where the hull planking will go. This is the initial skeleton of the ship frame put together. Some curved surfaces still need smoothing, as I have not yet applied the solidify modifier on most of the meshes.

Great reference clip from ILM for Ocean/Water FX used in the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 film

Interesting video discussing techniques used to achieve the ocean/water fx in the Pirates 3 movie, specifically the Maelstrom scene. Good reference for high quality production of water effects with oceans and ships.

Ships Hull Reference Images

I’ve decided that image texturing the ships hull is not detailed enough for what I need in this production. Here are some reference images for the profile I need to achieve.

Drakkar Longship WIP

Thought I would share what I’ve been working on lately. This is a test render of the current state of the first longship that I’m building for ROF. It was built using plans from a recreation of the Gokstad boat, so the dimensions are pretty accurate. The hull is a smooth mesh with the wood detail coming from an image texture. For me it’s not detailed enough because the real longships were made using the clinker style of planking, which leaves the bottom edge of each plank sticking out. I tried some tests with the array modifier and curve modifiers, and it came close, but it did not give me the accuracy need when bringing the planks into the front and back of the hull. So, now I’m going to rebuild the ship using actual mesh planks for each plank in the hull. I’m going to use a different reference model sheet, so we’ll see how the next one turns out. So for now, ignore the colours and textures, they’re just for testing. I should have just rendered and AO image and posted that, but I’ve already changed the model, so too late now.
